There’s a bigger issue at play here. And there’s no need for a debate.
I find it eerily fascinating that this has become the dividing issue of our time even infecting many churches. After all homosexuality is no more or less damning than any other sin. True, it’s particularly bad inasmuch as it’s a lifestyle, but then most people choose some kind of sin-filled lifestyle anyway and the ‘least’ of those sins is damning.
I believe that there’s a bigger sin-issue hidden beneath this emotionally charged debate. The truth is that there is a deeper sin being promoted through and masked by this issue and it just happens to be the very first sin committed by man.
“Then the serpent said [...] your eyes will be opened, and you will
be like God, knowing good and evil. So when the woman saw that the tree was [...] desirable to make one wise…” – Genesis 3:4-6
“Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil.” – Genesis 3:22
That word translated as ‘know(ing)’ is ‘yada’ and in this context what it DOESN’T mean is that man suddenly became aware that right VS wrong existed. They were already fully aware of that concept otherwise God’s law to not eat from the tree would have been meaningless.
What it DOES mean is that mankind would from then onward desire to usurp from God the right to decide and declare for themselves what is right or wrong (good/evil) and also assign punishment. (In the Genesis 4:23-24 account of Lamech you see this in action)
And this desire is something we all inherited from our fathers. In effect, we have all “eaten from the tree”. True repentance is not about regretting specific sins. It’s about renouncing that in-born desire and accepting God as the sole authority to decide and declare right, wrong and punishment (Romans 3:23). This of course leads one to Jesus as the only way to escape THE punishment. (Genesis 2:17)
I submit to you that this is the true sin-foundation hidden underneath the gay-sin issue. The true debate is not so much what gay’s do but rather who has the right to declare that it’s wrong.
So the next time you find yourself in the gay-sin debate don’t play Satan’s game (2 Corinthians 2:11) by arguing the lesser issue. Instead go straight to the real issue in question and let the light of the truth reveal what it will.
