In a couple of weeks, we will be celebrating Christmas. For most of us, it will be the same as every other year: a time where we get together with family, eat good food, exchange gifts, and gather around a tree. Some of us may mention Jesus, and listen to Silent Night. Others of us may go to a church service or some sort, and light some candles. If you’re lucky, you may even get invited to go Christmas caroling, or to a nativity play.

Well I have some potentially disturbing news besides the fact that Santa Claus isn’t real.

Christmas is not about Jesus, or the birth of Jesus, God, or anything else remotely Biblical.

A nativity scene in a window display of a clothing store in Los Angeles with three women replacing the three wise men. The display received much criticism for having overt sexual undertones.

Christmas is a pagan holiday that was weaved into the Catholic church tradition centuries ago, that has been plagued with consumerism, paganism, sensual humor, and worldly motives.

My wife asked me tonight why doesn’t Christmas have it’s own symbol, like crosses, or anything that represents Christ, since Hanukkah has the menorah, etc… The answer is because Christmas is not about Christ! It’s about the pagans, and what they worship. It’s common knowledge that the “christmas” tree, or the fir tree is considered divine to pagans. They have been worshiping that tree for centuries. So it turns out that Christmas does have it’s own symbol. Think I’m making this up? The entire fifty-seventh chapter of Isaiah was dedicated to God reprimanding people who committed idol worship by “burning with lust under every green tree.”

The evergreen is an age old pagan symbol, dating back long before Christ came to earth. Because it never loses it’s color no matter the season, the pagans believed that this tree was worthy of worship, because every other plant died in the winter. Still to this day pagans worship the evergreen. And the Roman Catholic church incorporated this tree into the “Christmas” tradition when inventing the word Christmas with one of their saint figures, saint Nicholas.

Several issues with this concoction they put together. “Saints,” according to the Bible, are not football players, nor are they dead people. According to Ephesians 1:1, saints are me and you, or anyone who is a faithful follower of Christ. But the main point is that Paul is speaking to people who were alive. The Catholics are bold and possessed enough to wait until a follower of Christ dies to make them a saint. So not only is this wrong because it defies the Bible’s definition of a saint, but it also defies God when he told us not to worship any graven images, or to commune with the dead. (Deuteronomy 18:9).

So as you’re getting ready to spend time with your family, and tell jokes, and have a good time, please remember that this has nothing to do with Christ. The more we try to “keep Christ in Christmas,” the stupider we will look. Christ has never been in Christmas, since Christmas’ inception.

Here are a few ways we know for sure that Christmas isn’t Biblical:

  1. The word Christmas is no where in the Bible. People made it up.
  2. Every Christmas season, some of the most irreverent movies, skits, and songs come out, that do everything but glorify God. (Friday After Next, Bad Santa, etc…
  3. Christmas is one of the only times of year where all of the straight up blatant, “no shame in my game” sinners come to church. (Now I know that some people think that that’s a great thing, and that they need to be in church. But there has to be a bigger issue if year after year, they only come to church at Christmas…)
  4. Companies and products get the glory during this time, not Christ.
  5. The three wise men brought Jesus gifts, not each other. (See Matthew 2)

I know you may have already bought your tree this year, and made plans for Christmas dinner. But do Christ, and yourself a favor, and don’t try to keep Christ in Christmas. Let the world have their holiday. If we REALLY want to glorify Christ, let’s do it tomorrow, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, et cetera, et cetera.

UPDATE

- Forgot to add why the date Dec. 25 was chosen, since the Bible doesn’t give us a date. Any amount of research on the date, or on the Winter Solstice may surprise you upon finding out the close connections that this pagan holiday has with Christmas. In other words, it could be argued that Christmas is just the ‘catholic’ version of the winter solstice. The winter solstice is an astrological event that takes place annually, where the earth’s axial tilt is the farthest away from the sun. Even though this event only lasts for a few seconds, people and cultures throughout the ages used this as a time to celebrate and drink, and be with family, and have festivals, essentially worshiping nature. (My two cents: I don’t think it’s coincidence that this event represents the time when the “earth” is farthest away from the “sun.” Get it?)

- Also forgot to add that the word Christmas, was derived from “Christ’s Mass,” but when the objection to the Roman Catholic Church’s unbiblical way of doing things started to peak, the church combined the words in order to make the term more commercial, and not as obviously catholic.

- To learn more about this the day, it’s history, where the church comes in, where paganism comes in, this wikipedia write-up has an impressive amount of data, references, and resources as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas
