This year, we’ve seen alot of commercials, articles, and press around the Generation Y phenomenon of shorthand via SMS (text messaging) and IM (instant messaging). In the job search advice space, it has been categorized as one of the “thou shalt not” bits of advice for entry-level employees. Funny thing is in the start-up space, and within companies with less than 1,000 employees (from my experience), there is a high use of email shorthand that takes place within daily communications. Phrases such as:

WFH (work from home)
EOM (end of message)
OOO (out of office)

are three of many. But I think there is some sort of false portrayal of the workplace, that makes employees not seem like people anymore (I.e. people speak proper queen’s english all of the time, every employee to be hired in corporate America has proper diction and is grammatically and politically correct 100% of the time, etc…) I think within its context, its a good point that college students should expect to change the way they present themselves for professionalism’s sake, but let’s be realistic.
